Kitchen Flatware

Is it time to spruce up your at-home dining situation? The right vibe is about way more than just the table linens. There are some key things you should know that will help you perfect your set-up, so let’s start with the basics like the difference between kitchen flatware sets and silverware sets, then we can get to the fun stuff!

What’s The Difference Between Silverware And Flatware?
Though the terms are often used interchangeably, silverware is a representative term for anything made from silver or with a silver-tone. Traditionally, utensils like knives, forks and spoons were made from solid silver, but in its broadest sense, “silverware” can also be used to describe things like trophies or medals.

Since our eating utensils are rarely made from actual silver these days, the term “flatware” has become more widely used. So if you’ve ever caught yourself referring to gold-tone utensils as “gold silverware” because you weren’t sure what else to call them, gold flatware is your answer. The same thing goes for black silverware (aka black flatware), which along with coordinating dinnerware, has been trending as a striking way to modernize your tablescape.

So, What Is Cutlery Then?
Cutlery refers to both place-setting and serving utensils. A typical cutlery set includes a table knife and fork for the main course, a salad and dessert fork, a dessert spoon and a tea spoon. A traditional serving set includes a cold meat fork, a gravy ladle and a tablespoon. An entertainment cutlery set includes a large serving spoon, a large serving fork and a pastry server for desserts. And since we’ve got entertaining on the mind, be sure to think about what beverages you will be serving and make sure you have the right glassware, too.

What Else Should I Do Before Hosting A Dinner Party?
Once you’ve sorted out your menu, it’s time to think of logistics. Do you have elegant serveware to hold your main dishes, veggies and sides? Will you go without full table linens and opt for a decorative runner? All these little things add up, so make sure you’ve checked all the boxes beforehand.
